Prof. Dr. Dayang Aziz is the first woman Professor of Paediatric Surgery in Malaysia and the first woman to lead Paediatric Surgery services in an academic institution in Malaysia. She obtained BMedSc from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in 1992 and graduated with MD (UKM) in 1995. She passed as Fellow of the RCS Edinburgh (UK) in 1999 and started specialising in Paediatric Surgery in 2001 under Ministry of Health Malaysia. In 2003, she was sent to UK and Australia for subspecialisation in Paediatric Laparoscopy. She completed her training as Fellow in Paediatric Laparoscopy from WCH Adelaide Australia in 2005. She joined UKM in October 2007 as Senior Fellow in Paediatric Surgery. She was instrumental for the development of Advanced Surgical Skill Centre (ASSC) and the installation of the four Fully Integrated High Definition Storz Operating Theatres at UKM Medical Centre (UKMMC) as well as developing UKMMC as a centre for Advanced Paediatric and Neonatal Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS). In September 2011, she took over as Head of Paediatric Surgery at UKMMC. Prof. Dayang Aziz has performed many historic MIS in neonates and children. She holds National records for being the first local surgeon to perform difficult neonatal thoracoscopic surgeries for congenital anomalies like long-gap esophageal atresia and tracheo-esophageal fistula, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, high eventration of the hemidiaphragm, laparoscopic duodenal atresia repair and many others. She also holds the world record for having performed near-total laparoscopic pancreatectomy in a-14-day-old neonate who suffered from Persistent Hyperinsulinemic Hypoglycaemia (PHHI) in 2011. She has published many of her innovative techniques including the Port-less Thoracoscopy. She is also regularly invited as a faculty member and key-note speaker at many international conferences. During her leadership, UKMMC was recognised as the centre which performed the highest number of paediatric MIS cases annually in Malaysia. Although she finished her term as head of the unit in August 2019, she continues to be active at supervising and training of local and international paediatric surgeons (especially those from ASEAN) in the field of basic and advanced paediatric MIS. Prof Dayang Aziz is also the first paediatric surgeon in ASIA to be accredited as Senior Examiner for the European Board of Paediatric Surgery (EBPS).
