Prof.
Aamir Ghafoor Khan is one of leading Gastroenterologist and Physicians of
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
After
having trained in the United Kingdom for nearly 24 years, he chose to come back
to serve his country.
He
established the first Gastroenterology and Hepatology Unit in Lady Reading
Hospital in 2011.Lady reading is one of the country's largest tertiary care hospital,
which has dealt with major terrorist attack victims including the APS School
disaster.
A
dedicated Hepatitis Outpatient Clinic has been established by Prof Aamir, which
deals exclusively with Hepatitis and its related complications five days a week.
It provides free medicine to poor patients and also provides free consultation
to poor patients from the neighboring country Afghanistan.
Nearly
30,000 patients are seen yearly in the clinic.
During
current Corona Epidemic Prof aamir has been leading from front and was
Instrumental in setting up First Live Telemedical ward rounds of Corona ICU
patient, in collaboration with USA Based Physicians (APPNA).
Prof
Aamir has been able to start MRCP (UK) Clinical Exam (PACES) in Pakistan, which
is a major achievement in postgraduate examination in the World. Now UK doctors
are coming to Pakistan to conduct exam, with first exam having been administered in Jan 2020 in Rawalpindi.
Prof Aamir is the Past President of Pakistan
Society of Gastroenterology & GI Endoscopy.
Currently
he heads the GI & Hepatology division at Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar,
Pakistan. He was the first was Medical Director of Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar,
which is one of the largest tertiary care teaching hospitals in Pakistan.
Besides being the Focal Person for Hepatology in KPK Province of Pakistan,
Prof. Aamir is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and
is examiner for MRCP(UK) and FCPS exams. He is currently International Adviser
(IA) to the Royal College of Physicians of London and also Royal College of
Physicians of Edinburgh.
In
this regard he has made tremendous effort in putting Pakistan at the forefront
of Medical Community. The Royal College of Physician London (RCP) this year (2018)
is celebrating its 500 years’ anniversary and due to Prof Aamir efforts, the
College kid off the celebrations from Pakistan. A Visit by The President and
Senior Officers of the Royal College was conducted in January 2018.The
delegation was led by the President of Royal College of London Dame Jane Dacre.
The Team visited various medical facilities including Military Hospital in Rawalpindi.
Various meetings and discussions were held with leaders of Pakistan Medical
fraternity and plans were made to hold future mutual bilateral collaborations
between Royal Colleges and Pakistani Medical Institution.
The
Royal College team also called on and were hosted by President of Pakistan Mr
Mamnoon Hussain.
Soon
after another visit was arranged by Prof Aamir of Royal College of Physicians
Edinburgh in his capacity as the Royal College International advisor. That team
was led by The College President Prof Derek Bell OB. The team evaluated the
training and clinical work of Armed Forces Cardiology Institute to accredit
there Training Program. The team also took part in Medical seminars and
conducted MRCP Part 2 mock clinical exam, for the first time in Pakistan.
The
Royal College team also called on the President of Pakistan Mr. Arif Alvi.
During discussion with Royal College team the President of Pakistan Requested
the Prof Bell to consider holding Part 2 MRCP exam in Pakistan. This would be a
great facility to Pakistani doctors and would save them travelling to UK. The
requested was agreed to and Prof Bell promised to take up the matter with
concerned authorities. The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh President
Prof Bell had also offered an honorary Fellowship (FRCP) to the Past President
of Pakistan, which was gracefully accepted by Mr. Mamnoon Hussain.
Prof
Aamir Ghafoor Khan, has a sound academic background with presence on editorial
boards and as reviewer for various Journals like Arab Journal of
Gastroenterology, Hepatitis Journal of Iran, and Pakistan Journal of
Gastroenterology etc. He is a core committee member of World Gastroenterology Organization
(WGO) Guidelines Committee.
Prof.
Aamir is a frequent speaker at various International GI & Hepatology
meetings and his unit is actively engaged in clinical research in the field of
Gastroenterology, with nearly 40 publications to his credit. Besides his
academic & professional commitments, he is a keen Squash and Cricket player
and a keen Hunter as well.
